Letterkenny season 10 stars Evan Stern, Tyler Johnston and Melanie Scrofano discuss the joys of returning for a double-season production and more.
Jared Keeso and Jacob Tierney's Letterkenny is one of the most celebrated Canadian sitcoms of the past decade, having first premiered on Crave before moving to Hulu in season 5. The series revolves around the hicks, skids and hockey players living in the titular Ontario community as they navigate friendships, dating and the degenerates from upcountry.
As the series came back to Hulu, Trending USA spoke exclusively with stars Evan Stern, Tyler Johnston and Melanie Scrofano to discuss Letterkenny season 10, the fun of coming back for a double-season production and their most outrageous moments in the new season.
Evan Stern: It was so good to be back with my friends, except for Tyler. [Laughs] It had been so long since we've been together and been able to shoot and I feel like you could feel it in season 10. The energy of everyone getting back together and giggling and being able to shoot again. Shooting season 10 and 11 back-to-back is just a joy, it's a joy to have that much time with each other as well.
Tyler Johnston: Yeah, it was interesting, Grant, with the whole situation with the world thing, having our season taken away from us when we're planning on shooting in 2020, too. Then, you know, all those question marks in the air and then we're coming back for this double-season shooting schedule. Leading up to it, we were extremely excited and we get there and it wasn't the exact same we were used to, with social distancing and all these things, but I think it puts things in perspective when something's taken away like that.
We were all very, very grateful to get back to work and have some fun and to get to shoot 14 episodes in one go was pretty special. Like Evan said, we don't get to spend as much time together anymore as we would like and we relish our opportunities to hang out and make us laugh and make other people laugh.
Melanie Scrofano: Yeah, I always felt like Letterkenny feels like a working vacation. There doesn't feel like any pressure, you just feel like you're going to camp and play. So it was a treat to go back, especially after a tough year.
Melanie Scrofano: Talking about the gin, right? I didn't realize it was a cold open, I forgot. [Laughs] Here's the thing, that was my first time on this show where I have to actually do what everybody else does, which was memorize eight pages of just back and forth. That was not a working vacation, that was really hard just because you're so aware of how funny it is and then you just are like, "Oh, man, if I drop the ball on this, this gold is gone. So that was a bit stressful, there was a lot of just walking around my hotel room, saying the word "gin gash" and variants of drugs. It was a lot of fun once we finally got it out.
Evan Stern: Oh yeah. That was shot like B-roll, which doesn't happen very often, so we don't have Jacob [Tierney] there telling us that's a bad idea. So Tyler and I and Brandon, who's the one that shot that portion of it, are just let loose in a playground. [Laughs] It sort of unfolded the way that it unfolded.
Tyler Johnston: Yeah, they had some ideas that they brought to set that day and then Evan and I just kind of ran with it and created our own hijinks, I think was the word you use.
Evan Stern: Yeah, hijinks is a good word, they were high-jinks, you know what I'm saying? [Chuckles]
